Quantum simulations

Since nature, especially at the smallest scale, follows the rules of quantum mechanics, it seems to follow that a quantum computer would be an ideal device for simulating such aspects of the world around us. At Fermilab, we are working on algorithms to simulate the interactions of fermions (particles of matter) and bosons (force-carrying particles) using qubits of quantum computers. We have extended existing quantum algorithms involving fermion systems to include phonons, a boson particle in condensed matter physics and quantum chemistry. So far, this work has been tested on quantum computer simulators, and we are attempting to structure the algorithms to meet the limitations of current actual quantum computation devices.
